This mural from local artist Ricky Also has been created to celebrate the life and writing of Flora Thompson who lived in Winton in the early 1900’S. Self-educated in Winton Library she went on to write the celebrated semi autobiographical ‘Lark Rise to Candleford, which described the old country ways of her childhood and how these had been swept aside by Victorian ‘progress. While she expressed an obvious nostalgia for her country life, she was also keenly aware of the benefits of modern developments for working people through the social reform movement. Her conflicting views were expressed perfectly with her quote. “For myself, I would desire a combination of old romance & modern machinery”. A sentiment that feels just as relevant in the world today. The mural was funded by the local BH9 Business Community.
