The station roundabout underpass in Bournemouth is an important connection between the main train station and town centre. This busy network of passes (un-affectionately named the Bear Pitt) had over the years become a neglected and run-down space. An area people passed through as quickly as possible. Bournemouth Council approached Paintshop Studio with the hope of brightening up the space with artwork, in conjunction with a general clean-up of the area and a new pop up café. We pitched to create new typographic artworks that were both strong, eye-catching pieces of art and effective wayfinding, helping guide people through the disorienting network. We built into the design clear directional labelling for North, South, East and West, distinct colour themes and a strong graphic style. The artworks have proved to be a huge success and instantly made the area feel brighter and safer and transformed into a popular place to linger.
